Katja Roberts

Katja’s passion for filmmaking was ignited during her upbringing on the vibrant film sets of the Amber Film Collective in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Immersed in both acting and production, she founded her skills within this unique and visionary organisation. In 2007, Katja co-founded Meerkat Films, where she has worked as an in-house director for over 15 years.

Throughout Katja’s career, she has crafted a diverse portfolio, spanning from poignant short dramas to captivating observational documentaries, impactful campaign films, and engaging factual entertainment. Her award-winning work has resonated with audiences worldwide through esteemed platforms such as the BBC, National Geographic, various online platforms, and prestigious film festivals.

Katja’s primary focus lies in Directing drama, where she delves into profound human themes through accessible narratives, rich characters, and intelligent humour.

Her stand-out BAFTA and BIFA qualifying shorts include BAFTA longlisted ‘The Ball’ and most recently ‘KISS’, which started its festival run at the Manchester International Film Festival this year to great reception.

Drawing from her background in documentary filmmaking, she brings a meticulous eye for detail and a deep understanding of human behaviour to her scripted work, ensuring a delicate, informed, and nuanced approach to storytelling.

Katja is a member of BAFTA Connect and is currently participating in the Director’s UK ‘Inspire’ program as part of the 23/24 cohort. She is receiving mentorship from China Moo-Young in HETV directing, recently shadowing on a series for Paramount UK in the UK and Spain.
