AJ Sykes is a respected filmmaker, with her latest film ‘The Biscuit Tin’, embarking on a successful festival run, garnering multiple nominations and winning 4 Awards so far, including ‘Best Director’ at the Monza Film Festival 2024 in Italy. AJ’s directorial acumen was also on display in ‘Regrets’, a short film produced by Akram Films, which collected 5 awards and 15 nominations, including appearances at BAFTA Accredited Festivals.
AJ’s extensive industry experience is also enriched by mentorships, having shadowed Director Douglas Mackinnon on ‘Good Omens’ and various directors on BBC/ STV’s ‘Shetland’ and STV news. She was a finalist for the last BBC run Rivercity Directors Scheme, is an esteemed member of the 2023/24 BAFTA Connect cohort, continuing to influence the film industry with her visionary work.
Her dynamic career in film is marked by a series of acclaimed short films ranging from 2 to 35 mins which have been showcased at over 30 international festivals, earning more than 30 nominations and securing 15 awards.
She has filmed on everything from SLR’s to Arri Alexa’s and shot her masters film on 8mm meaning she knows how to shoot for the edit. Further diversifying her portfolio, AJ directed the groundbreaking music video ‘Heard’, part of the world’s first augmented reality album by Travelled Music.
Her adaptability shone during the COVID-19 lockdown, directing the international remote film project, ‘Project 19’, collaborating with actors across the globe.
AJ holds a Master’s in Directing & Screenwriting, an MFA in Advanced Film Practice and a DSMS in Stage Management. As well as Television Production from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has been recognised as an award-winning actress. She previously wrote and directed for theatre winning a Fringe First for Dreamstate.
